Boats and Armor

Boat Armor In years past, the words, "boat" and "armor" were rarely used in the same sentence. Since 9/11 this has changed dramatically. With the threat of waterborne terrorist attacks ever so existent, ballistic protection is rapidly becoming a part of every day security requirements.

From vehicle (marine craft) -borne IED’s to small arms weaponry, military, law enforcement and security personnel are becoming more frequently engaged in hostile environments here in the homeland as well as abroad.

Also growing is the constant growing threat of piracy. In 2008 alone, pirates attacked over 100 ships, hijacking some 49 of them, resulting in paid ransoms in the tens of millions of dollars, as well as human casualties.

When considering protection for small marine craft or large vessels it is important to weigh in on the broad spectrum of ballistic and blast threats existent in today’s marine environment; and to ensure safe passage in a dangerous world.

A Trip to Brookville Lake (Brookville, Indiana)

This past weekend my girfriend and I went over to Brookville Lake to take some pictures and hike around. Brookville Lake is a 5,260 acre lake populated by fisherman and pleasure boaters alike. While I’m from Ohio and mostly fish those lakes I have fished Brookville lake a few times for bass but unforunately the catches were few and far between. Now I’m not saying it’s not a good fishing lake it’s just the fishing pressure is enormous with boats lined up in the bays and coves along the shoreline. To those who know the lake well, I’m sure they do just fine.

But as I said this trip was just some sightseeing. We found out we both spent  lot of time here in our younger days and joked we could’ve ran into each other and never knew. I spent nearly every summer weekend at Hickory Woods campground going swimming over at the Mounds and Whitewater. She spent a lot of time at Quaker Town beach.

Well this aricle is more about the pictures, so enjoy.  But I will throw in one plug so for all your fishing gear, camping gear, hunting gear, and outdoor fun and sports go to Blue Lake Tackle,LTD. We’ll be glad to serve you.

Camping Tips to Help Enjoy Your Holiday

This article will provide some basic camping tips for you to enjoy your holiday. Camping is an all-time favorite for all across North America, especially during the summer and even any time of the year. It has been so popular because it does not only create an opportunity for families to develop and strengthen their bonding, spend quality time together but also helps in discovering and learning new sets of skills.

Every member of the family will discover new principles and learn lessons that could never be learned in any other way. Therefore, whether you are currently planning for your family’s first ever camping trip or an avid camper that would like to improve those previous camping moments, then here are some simple but helpful camping tips you need to consider including in your plans. camping-tent-1

Location

There will be no camping once there is no good venue or place to camp. If you want to ensure that your family will have an exciting and safe camping, be sure to check on the place that you will be holding the activity. Check on every possible circumstance that might affect the total success of your activities.

If your family is planning to go fishing then you need to check on the area if fishing is allowed or if there is not much distractions present. Also, be sure to coordinate with the local authorities about the safety precautions, limitations and other recommendations for the area. Do not just camp in a place where you don’t even have a map or has no signal for cellular phones as this may cause great trouble in case you will get lost. Familiarize the place before you go, as this will prove helpful during emergencies.

Food

The most basic and essential item in your list should be the food or you will end up starving your whole family in the middle of nowhere. You cannot just go on an adventure trip and rely on the hunting skills that you have. It is always safe and advisable to take with you food supplies and extra stocks in case you are stranded by a sudden weather change in the middle of nowhere. Bring with you canned goods and other imperishable supplies because activities such as walking, climbing and running will exhaust much of your energy and from time to time your body will require you to replenish it.

Camping Gears, Clothing and Accessories

Do not take too much gear and clothes with you that will only hinder or slow you down in your travel. One of the best camping tips I got from my friends who have been on many successful trips is to carry lightweight yet super durable gear.

This means you should not exhaust your energy carrying too much clothes and equipment. Those are just some of the essential items that you need to prepare so you and your whole family would enjoy the whole experience. Travel light yet be sure to bring every essential survival items.Tom is an experienced camper who has been camping all his life. He has taken many family trips and many canoe trips as well. Small Outboard Engines

electric-outboard-1If you can accept that electric outboards will limit your range and speed, and you want to troll quietly, then it might well be the option for you. If you rely on your engine to stem the tide, you should stick to your petrol engine for a while longer. What to look for - Twist-grip tiller throttle - look out for good labelling and robust construction. Friction control - should be tight enough to leave the engine to steer itself. Stop button and kill cord - it’s possible for the lanyard to get tangled up when you spin the engine. Mounting bracket - must have a nut or nut wing, or a captive pin. Screw clamps - look for loops in the end of the screw clamp handles. These can be padlocked to deter from theft. Carrying handle - designed to carry the engine comfortably. Fuel cap and tank breather - the cap should be easy to remove. Gear leaver - small outboard engines have no reverse so the leaver selects neutral or forward. Oil sight gauge - this is vital. If oil leaks out, most sumps only take a mug full of oil. Fuel tap - check for clear labelling. Tilt mechanism - some models have multiple tilt positions.

Electric outboards - Electric outboards may well be the future. They’re quiet, environmentally friendly and compact. But most require a heavy battery which will limit your range. Electric outboards are traditionally used for trolling - designed to move a heavy boat at a low speed with the main engine switched off, often used by American lake fishermen.

In use, electric engines are environmentally friendly. Buy how do they recharge? The environmental advantage is lost if you have to run the engine for hours to recharge the battery. The solution could be shore power. If you are visiting marinas a lot, you can charge the batteries when you berth. Or you could buy a spare battery and keep it charged.

You could also think about using one of your boat’s domestic batteries, but there is the risk of compromising power here. You might think about buying an extra domestic battery and interchanging it with one in your battery bank - so there is always one on charge and one in use.

Why not trickle charge your battery with a wind turbine or solar panel? Ideally you would have two batteries - one charging and the other in use.

Top 3 Electric tips - 1. When you motor with the engine on maximum, it will draw a large current. By reducing the speed by half a notch, the current will be halved without compromising speed too much.

2. Unlike petrol outboards where a leg is a fixed length, electric outboard’s height is adjustable. Trim it so the leg is at right angles to the water to improve efficiency.

3. Use wing nut battery terminals to clamp and release the power cables, without the use of a spanner. Crocodile clips are another option, but they can be easily knocked off.

If you can accept that electric outboards will limit your range and speed, and you want to troll quietly, then it might well be the option for you. If you rely on your engine to stem the tide, you should stick to your petrol engine for a while longer.

Pedometers – Walking for Fitness and Fun

There are many health benefits to be had by wearing a pedometer and using it regularly and properly. A pedometer is a device that measures the number of steps an individual takes. Pedometers are available from several companies and come in a variety of styles and range in price anywhere from $15 - $120. pedometer-1Buying the most expensive pedometer is the way to get the best pedometer, right? Sometimes, but in this particular case, price does not always matter. Those who use pedometers increased their steps by 2100 per day on the average, or 20 minutes straight of continuous walking which is a 30 percent increase in daily steps. For less than twenty-five dollars you can purchase a pedometer and it will help you lose weight without going broke.

If you are interested in knowing the distance you cover in your walking or running, get a pedometer with a distance calculation. Many walkers and runners are looking for what they call a GPS pedometer. There is one for skiers and crosstrainers, one for water sports, and more. It’s up to you to decide how many fancy bells and whistles you would like on your pedometer. Wear the pedometer on your belt or directly on your waistband right over your front pocket. There are also many models in the style of a wristwatch.

Establish a base figure of how many steps a day you take right now on average. A good program can help you stay on track until you meet your health and fitness goals. The important thing is to get out and move!

Is Your Accuracy Degrading?

firearms accuracyIf the accuracy of a frequently used firearm is degrading, there is a possibility that it is a fouled bore. The barrel of any modern firearm takes an amazing amount of punishment. High power cartridges expel white hot gases under incredibly high pressure, eroding the throat, fusing carbon onto the rifling, while bullets are physically swaged down the barrel, depositing copper into the lands and grooves.

Sound bad? It’s not. It’s all part of the plan. Routine cleaning and maintenance keep this from becoming a problem. But sometimes the maintenance gets put off.

If cleaning the barrel gets put off a while, it might end up with excessive carbon and copper fouling. At this point accuracy will usually start to suffer. Typical solvents won’t get this out of the barrel. Fortunately there’s a better way through chemistry. In this instance, there are a couple of chemicals that can solve the problem.

You need a foaming bore cleaner that expands as it's applied and clings to the bore to gently dissolve copper and brass fouling. This makes removal easy. A bore paste works through a mechanical action to cut through copper, moly and hardened powder fouling. Neither harms the metal of the bore.

Both products will leave the inside of the barrel stripped of any protective oil, so follow the procedure with a patch coated with a synthetic oil to clean, lubricate and protect the metal.
