Writing at the Big Government website, Mr. Lott offers a counterintuitive truth: "President Obama surely didn't intend it, but he deserves some credit for last year's 7.4 percent drop in murder rates. His election caused gun sales to soar, and crime rates to plummet." Gun sales soared because Americans rightly feared the leftist president would try to severely restrict the right to own firearms, particularly handguns. The AR-15 Accessories’s receiver was made of forged and milled aluminum alloy instead of steel. The barrel was mated to the receiver by a separate hardened steel extension to which the bolt locked. This allowed a lightweight aluminum receiver to be used while still maintaining a steel-on-steel lockup. The bolt was operated by high-pressure combustion gases taken from a hole in the middle of the barrel directly through a tube above the barrel to a cylinder created in the bolt carrier with the bolt carrier itself acting as a piston. Traditional rifles located this cylinder and piston close to the gas vent. The stock and grips were made of a glass-reinforced plastic shell over a rigid foam plastic core. The muzzle brake was fabricated from titanium. Over Stoner’s objections, various experimental composite and ‘Sullaloy’ aluminum barrels were fitted to some AR-15 Accessories prototypes by ArmaLite’s president, George Sullivan. The Sullaloy barrel was made entirely of heat-treated aluminum, while the composite barrels used aluminum extruded over a thin stainless steel liner.

Rohrbaugh R9. The Rohrbaugh R9 is currently the smallest 9 mm pistol on the market, replacing the Kel-Tec P11 which formerly held that distinction. All of these mouseguns conceal especially well. Mousegun-pistols using .45 exist too; examples include the Kahr PM45 and Para-Ordnance p6.45 and p10.45. When firing these weapons, one should however expect quite a kick due to their high power/weight ratio.

Still, for the intended self-defense application, over distances of only 3-7 yards (2.7 - 6.4 m), they can serve admirably. Despite the marginal power, many people carry mouseguns for defense, on the premise that a weak pistol you can easily carry/conceal is far better than a powerful gun you leave at home (because it cannot be easily carried/concealed). A mousegun is often the gun carried when one is carrying a deeply-concealed handgun, or it is the gun carried when one is ostensibly, by all appearances, not carrying. Additionally, the engineering required to build such a small handgun is admired by many, and there are thus many people who enjoy collecting and shooting mouseguns.

-

Mexico's president asks U.S. to ban assault weapons
CNN May 20 2010 9:12PM GMT

Weaver : MWG AR-15, Mini 14, Ruger 10/22 Magazines and Accessories:
Weaver Scope: 849431/849432 Classic Rimfire Series 2.5 - 7 x 28 Rifle Scope Price: $139.95

Holsters4guns: Leather Holsters
Galco Holsters FX Suede Lined Belt Holster - Tan or Black Leather Price: $109.95

Ruger 10/22 Accessories : MWG AR-15, Mini 14, Ruger 10/22 Magazines ...
Shooters Ridge, Ruger 10/22 Rifle Stock with Thumbhole - Pink; Realtree Hardwood Camouflage Price: $134.50

Holsters4guns: FOBUS HOLSTERS
Fobus Thumb Break Roto Holsters (Right Handed) - Paddle or Belt Price: $49.95

Holsters4guns: SAFARILAND HOLSTERS
PRODUCTS FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT.
In order to create such small pistols, engineering compromises need to be made, and many mouseguns lack features such as slide stops and external safeties, and few function quite as reliably as refined, full-size designs such as the M1911. The small size and mass of the pistol, and low energy of the cartridge, also can make functioning of semi-automatic versions less reliable. With the short sight radius, and low-profile, snag-resistant iron sights, which are required for meeting the needs for a deeply-concealed handgun, these guns are also difficult to shoot accurately over longer distances.

-

Unfortunately for ArmaLite, the rifle’s aluminum/steel composite barrel (an untried prototype design specified for the tests by ArmaLite’s president, George Sullivan, over Stoner’s vehement objections) burst in a torture test conducted by Springfield Armory in early 1957.[4] ArmaLite quickly replaced it with a conventional steel barrel, but the damage had been done. The final Springfield Armory report advised against adoption of the rifle, stating that “it would take five years or more to take it through tests to adoption”.[3] While ArmaLite objected, it was clear that the AR-15 Accessories, a brand-new rifle still in the prototype stage, was at a disadvantage compared to competing designs with longer development cycles, and by 1957, U.S. Army infantry forces urgently required a modern, magazine-fed infantry rifle to replace the M1.[5] In the end the Army chose the conventional T44, which entered production as the M14 rifle in 1957.

For Immediate Release
Friday February 26, 2010
BC Wildlife Federation
Vancouver, B.C.

BC Wildlife Federation Issues Warning To Public About Grizzly Bears

Vancouver, BC – Mel Arnold, President of BC Wildlife Federation which represents 37,000 hunters, anglers and outdoor recreationists, stated “The public must be made aware that recent media releases and paid advertisements are misleading the public about grizzly bears and how well they are managed in British Columbia”.

Grizzly bear populations are not at risk as described by these recent deceptive media releases and advertisements; their sustainability is not threatened by hunting. An independent international team of scientists reviewed bear management in BC and made recommendations to the province’s Grizzly Bear Management Strategy in 2002. These recommendations include recognition that both hunting and non-consumptive use are acceptable management objectives. Sustainable harvest rates for grizzly bears can be as high as nine per cent; BC manages more conservatively at a maximum of six per cent for total human-caused mortality, with an actual hunter harvest rate of approximately two per cent.

British Columbia has reliable management programs in place for Grizzly Bears. They are a valued, hunted species, not treated like pests as they have been in other jurisdictions. More money has been spent on Grizzly Bear DNA research in BC than on any other species. This scientifically sound research is being ignored by organizations that once used science to back their case. They are now resorting to using myths to bolster their fundraising campaigns. This fundraising rarely if ever goes toward “on the ground” habitat protection or restoration. Hunters and anglers on the other hand have directly contributed over $3 Million to projects related to the Grizzly Bear Conservation Strategy. Over $1 Million has gone directly to support state-of-the-art DNA mark-recapture inventory projects, providing data to derive reliable population information.

The question needs to be asked why a formerly reputable organization would quote an ecologist based in California when British Columbia and Canada have the best government and independent professional biologists in the world, some with more than 30 years experience in bear research and management.

The BC Ministry of Environment manages wildlife based on science. In July 2001 a moratorium on Grizzly Bear hunting was overturned. Later that year an independent international review panel studied the province’s Grizzly Bear management programs. The composition of this panel was based on recommendations from the International Association for Bear Research and Management.

While hunting is allowed in most Provincial Parks, National Parks where hunting is not allowed, have some of the highest human caused mortality rates for Grizzly Bears. Many of these bears become habituated and aggressive toward humans and are not hunted but must be destroyed for public safety; others are killed in vehicle collisions.

Hunters have historically shown they are willing to contribute to and support management programs based on science and sustainability. Hunting is much more than a traditional pastime. It contributes more than $350 Million per year in revenue for the province, is continuously renewable and sustainable and creates jobs province-wide providing employment in areas struggling through tough economic times. Contrary to insinuations made by others, hunters govern their own activities based on the highest of ethics and respect for the wildlife they harvest.

It is of grave concern when international groups try to inappropriately influence wildlife management in BC. In our beautiful province we have the most intact and healthy biodiversity in the world. This is achieved through scientific management and with the support of BC residents and long term conservation organizations such as the BC Wildlife Federation.

For further information, please contact Patti MacAhonic, Executive Director of BCWF at 604-291-9990 extension 230 or 604-308-1914. Click here to e-mail.

BCWF is a province-wide voluntary conservation organization representing over 37,000 British Columbian members whose aims are to protect, enhance and promote the wise use of the environment for the benefit of present and future generations.

BC Wildlife Federation was incorporated under the BC Societies Act in 1951 and it became a registered charity in 1969. The Federation is British Columbia’s largest and oldest conservation organization.

Last year I reported that Izhmash would launch a new line of AK-style rifles this year. While this new line has not yet materialized, a prototype has been unveiled. It modernizes the AK-74M / AK-100 series by adding rails for optics and other accessories, as well as a few other minor improvements.

The following photos show one of the new prototype AK rifles.

Chambers 7.62x39mm. This means Izhmash also plan on updating their export rifles (the AK-100 series).

In the above photo you can see the new thumb safety. It simply prevents the trigger from being pulled back when it is engaged, very much resembling the SKS safety. One of the problems with the AK rifles is that it is slow to disengage the safety. This safety allows the operator to disengage the standard safety and put the rifle on semi or full auto mode, but reduces the chance of an accidental discharge.

The pistol grip has been updated and made more ergonomic.

The dust cover now features a rail for optics. To prevent a loss of zero when opened, the dust cover features a lever to lock it in place. The cover does detach from the gun but instead it hinges just in front of the rear sight.

The butt stock now stores the cleaning rod. <del>It appears to have a slot cut in it for a sling, as well as the standard sling swivel</del>. UPDATE: The slot exists so that a recoil pad can be attached. (Thanks Johnny for the correction).

The rear sight is now adjusted differently. The dust cover hinge can be clearly seen.

The forward rail sits above the gas tube.

I can't decide if that is a side rail or not.

Bottom rail and a side rail.

While many of these modification are not pretty, they all seem like good ideas. In Iraq and Afghanistan all the allied forces are issuing optics (expect, of course, the cash-poor indigenous troops). I am sure the Russian Army does not want to fall behind everyone else and Izhmash does not want to lose sales to because their current stable of rifles lacks a decent rail system for optics and accessories.

Many thanks to Max Popenker for his help and insight.

Yesterday, on his 90th Birthday, Mikhail Kalashnikov was named "Hero of the Russian Federation". This award is the highest that can be bestowed on an individual by the Russian president. Kalashnikov has previously twice been awarded Hero of Socialist Labor that, which along with Hero of the Soviet Union, was replaced by Hero of the Russian Federation in 1992.

The Associated Press reports:

"Age is not significant. I have plenty of life left in me. But still, this is a special date and it needs to be celebrated," the white-haired inventor said in remarks broadcast on Russian television.

Kalashnikov, whose tie was decorated with a metal pin shaped like an AK-47, smiled and read patriotic poetry to journalists in Izhevsk, his hometown located 1,300 kilometers (800 miles) east of Moscow.

A fine award for a great man.

Many thanks to Morten for the link.

I had heard no news about the Army search for a "subcompact"1 for quite a long time and thought that the idea had been dropped. Apparently this is not so. The Military Times reports:

Despite initial industry suspicion that the Army would let the effort die a slow death, the service is moving forward with the development of a compact weapon that shoots like a rifle but slings like a sub gun.

According to the Army official in charge of fielding new weapons for the service, the search for a so-called "subcompact individual weapon system" is moving ahead in earnest. In May, the Army sponsored a user evaluation where Soldiers put subcompact weapons through their paces to see if the idea would stick.

...

"To some people [the issues] are fundamental, to other people they're on the margins - it depends on who you talk to," he added, declining to be more specific.

The service is also waiting for the final version of the fiscal 2010 Pentagon budget to be signed by the president, releasing nearly $10 million to start the program.

...

Army officials have said that if all the benchmarks are met, Joes could potentially see a new rifle or redesigned M-4 by 2012.

The more important question is if they are willing to adopt a new cartridge. I don't think anyone would argue that the 5.56mm NATO performs well out of a sub-carbine (11" or shorter) barrel.

Battenfeld Technologies, Inc. announced the launch of the new Lead Sled® Plus, the next-generation version of the revolutionary Lead Sled recoil reduction rest.

Chief among the improvements are a newly-designed precision elevation shaft that virtually eliminates wobble and play, and an innovative, adjustable weight tray ideal for plate or barbell weights, sandbags, lead shot or other weight materials. "We simply took a great product and made it even better," says Adam Birk, New Model Manager.

According to Battenfeld president Russ Potterfield, "... the Lead Sled has always been a popular product. Since its debut in 2003, it's been the shooting rest against which all others have been judged." With these improvements and an aggressive a national ad campaign designed to promote the new rest, Battenfeld executives are forecasting a spike in consumer interest in the Lead Sled family of shooting rests, which also includes the Lead Sled DFT.

To purchase the Lead Sled Plus, please visit GunAccessories.com
